キリストに倣いて（1.2.2 自分を軽んずること）

　むやみに物事を知りたいと望む心を捨てよ。なんとなれば、それは心の乱れと迷いとを引き起こすに過ぎないからである。

　いろいろなことを知っていいる者は、とかく他人に博学と思われ賢い人と言われたがる。

　しかし、知ったところで霊魂に利益の少ないことや、あるいは全く利益のないことが多いのである。

　だから自分の救霊に有益なことを除き、その他のことを考えるのは、ほんとうに愚かである。

　おしゃべりは霊魂を満足させぬ。ただ善良な生活だけが心をさわやかにし、潔白な良心が神に対する深い信頼を起こさせるのである。

 Rest from inordinate desire of knowledge, for therein is found much distraction and deceit.

 Those who have knowledge desire to appear learned, and to be called wise.

 Many things there are to know which profiteth little or nothing to the soul.

 And foolish out of measure is he who attendeth upon other things rather than those which serve to his soul's health.

 Many words satisfy not the soul, but a good life refresheth the mind, and a pure conscience giveth great confidence towards God.
