キリストに倣いて(1.11.2 安心を得ること、および徳に進む熱心について)

　どうしてある聖人がたは、あれほど完徳に進み観想生活のあんな高い所まで達することができたのだろう？

 それはあらゆるこの世の欲望を取り除こうと努め、心の底から神にすがり、なんの妨げもなく自由に自分の救霊に尽くすことができたからである。

　ところが私たちはあまりに自分の欲望に動かされて、はかないこの世の物を得ようと心を使いすぎる。

　私たちはわずかひとつの悪にすら、みごとに打ち勝ったことなどめったにないし、日毎に進歩しようという熱心もない。

 それゆえいつまでも冷淡で生ぬるいままなのである。

　CHAPTER XI Of seeking peace of mind and of spiritual progress

 How came it to pass that many of the Saints were so perfect, so contamplative of Devine things?

 Because they steadfastly sought to mortify themselves from all worldly desires, and so were enabled to cling with their whole heart to God, and be free and at leisure for the thought of Him.

 We are too much occupied with our own affections, and too anxious about transitory things.

 Seldom, too, do we entirely conquer even a single fault, nor are we zealous for daily growth in grace.

 And so we remain lukewarm and unspiritual.
