キリストに倣いて（1.17.1 修道生活のこと)

　あなたはもし他人と平和に仲よくくらしたいならば、多くのことにおいて自分のわがままを捨てることを学ばなければならぬ。

　修道生活や他の団体の中にいて、不平も言わず、死ぬまで心変わりもせずに辛抱するのはなかなかなみたいていなことではない。

　だからここでよい生涯を送り、幸いな臨終をとげる人は恵まれた者である。

　あなたがもししっかりと善に立ち、徳の進歩を計ろうと思うならば、自分をこの世に流されている者、旅人であると見なすがよい。

　あなたがもし修道生活を送ろうと思うならば、キリストのおんために愚かな者とならなければならぬ。

　　CHAPTER XVII  Of a religious life

 It behoveth thee to learn to mortify thyself in many things, if thou wilt live in amity and concord with other men.

 It is no small thing to dwell in a religious community or congregation, and to live there without complaint, and therein to remain faithful even unto death.

 Blessed is he who hath lived a good life in such a body, and brought it to a happy end.

 If thou wilt stand fast and wilt profit as thou oughtest, hold thyself as an exile and a pilgrim upon the earth.

 Thou wilt have to be counted as a fool for Christ, if thou wilt lead a religious life.
