修道服をまとい髪をそることはあまり役に立たない。人をほんとうの修道者にするのは、行ないを改めたり、全く情欲をおさえたりすることである。
神と救霊以外のものを求める人は、悩みと悲しみとのほか何も得ないだろう。
自分をつまらぬ者として、すべての人の下になろうと努めぬ人は、長く安らかさを保つことができない。

2. The clothing and outward appearance are of small account: it is change of character and entire mortification of the affections which make a truly religious man.
Hw who seeketh aught save God and the health of his soul, shall find only tribulation and sorrow.
Nor can he stand long in peace, who striveth not to be least of all and servant of all.
