　自分のことをするのに適当な時間を作り、しばしば神のご恩を考えよ。好奇心を起こさせるような物ごとをさけよ。娯楽になるものよりも、むしろ痛悔の念を起こさせるものを読め。よけいな雑談や無益な往来をやめ、めずらしい話やうわさに耳を貸さなければ、有益な黙想にふける時間は十分にあるだろう。最も偉大な聖人たちは、できるだけ人との交際をさけ、隠遁して神に仕えようと心がけた。

1. Seek a suitable time for thy meditation, and think frequently of the mercies of God to thee. Leave curious questions. Study such matters as bring thee sorrow for sin rather than amusement. If thou withdraw thyself from trifling conversation and idle goings about, as well as from novelties and gossip, thou shalt find thy time sufficient and apt for good meditation. The greatest saint used to avoid as far as they could the company of men, and chose to live in secret with God.
