キリストに倣いて(1.2.4 自分を軽んずること)

　最も高尚で有益な学問は、本当に自分というものを知ってこれを軽んずることである。

　自分をつまらない者と思い、他人を自分よりよい人偉い人と尊敬するのは、大きい知恵であり完全である。

　あなたはたとい他人が公けに悪事を行ない、または重大な罪を犯すのを見たとしても、自分はかれより善良などと思ってはならぬ。なんとなればあなたのその善良な状態は、いつまで続くかわからないからである。

　私たちはみな弱い者である。しかしあなたは自分ほど弱い者はほかにないと思うがよい。

　That is the highest and most profitable lesson, when a man truly knoweth and judgeth lowly of himself.

 To account nothing of one's self, and to think always kindly and highly of others, this is great and perfect wisdom.

 Even shouldest thou see thy neighbor sin openly or grievously, yet thou oughtest not to reckon thyself better than he, for thou knowest not how long thou shalt keep thine integrity.

 All of us are weak and frail; hold thou no man more frail than thyself.
