キリストに倣いて(1.7.1 空頼みと高慢とを避けよ)

　人間や被造物を頼みにしている人は愚かである。

　イエズス・キリストを愛するゆえに、他人のために尽くし、この世で貧しい者と見られることを恥じてはならぬ。

　自分を頼みとせず、ただ神のみを頼みとせよ。

　全力を尽くして、あなたのできるだけのことをせよ、そうすれば神はあなたのよい志しを助けてくださるだろう。

　自分の知識、またどういう人の知恵才覚をも頼りにしてはならぬ。むしろ神の恩恵を頼みにするがよい。神は謙遜な人を引き立てて、高慢な者を斥けたもうのである。

　CHAPTER VII  Of fleeing from vain hope and pride

 Vain is the life of that man who putteth his trust in men or in any created Thing.

 Be not ashamed to be the servant of others for the love of Jesus Christ, and to be reckoned poor in this life.

 Rest not upon thyself, but build thy hope in God.

 Do what lieth in thy power, and God will help thy good intent.

 Trust not in thy learning, nor in the cleverness of any that lives, but rather trust in the favour of God, who resisteth the proud and giveth grace to the humble.
