キリストに倣いて(1.5.2 聖書の読み方について)

　人は消え去る。しかし「主の真理は永遠に消えることがない。」(詩編116.2)

　神はえこひいきなく、私たちにさまざまな方法でお語りになる。

　聖書を読む時、よく私たちの妨げとなるのは、ただアッサリと読みすごすべき所を、しいてむずかしく解釈しようとしたり、いろいろせんさくしようとしたりする好奇心である。

　もし聖書を読んで利益を得ようと望むならば、謙遜に、すなおな信仰の厚い心でこれを読み、決して学者だという評判をとろうなどとしてはならない。

　疑わしい所は進んで問い、黙って聖人がたの言葉を聞くがよい。また年よりたちのたとえ話もいやがってはならぬ。なにか道理がなければ、そういう話をするはずがないからである。

 2. Men pass away, but the truth of the Lord endureth for ever.

 Without respect of persons God speaketh to us in divers manners.

 Our own curiosity often hindereth us in the reading of holy writings, when we seek to understand and discuss, where we should pass simply on.

 If thou wouldst profit by thy reading, read humbly, simply, honestly, and not desiring to win a character for learning.

 Ask freely, and hear in silence the words of holy men; nor be displeased at the hard sayings of older men than thou, for they are not uttered without cause.
