　聖書中に求めるのは真理であって、美しい言葉ではない。

　聖書はすべてそれを書いた人の精神を汲んで読むべきである。

　聖書からは言い現わしかたの巧みさよりも、むしろためになることを求めなければならぬ。

　高尚深遠な書物と同様、信心を深めるやさしい書物をも愛読するがよい。

　著者の名声に迷わされず、その学問の深い浅いを問わず、ただ真理を愛する一筋の心からこれを読むべきである。

　だれの言葉かということは問題にせずともよい、ただその言葉の内容に注意せよ。

　CHAPTER V  Of the reading of Holy Scripture

 It is Truth which we must look for Holy Writ, not cunning of words.

 All Scripture ought to be read in the spirit in which it was written.

 We must rather seek for what is profitable in Scripture, than for what ministereth to subtlety in discourse.

 Therefore we ought to read books which are devotional and simple, as well as those are deep and difficult.

 And let not the weight of the writer be a stumbling-block to thee, whether he be of little or much learning, but let the love of the pure Truth draw thee to read.

 Ask not, who hath said this or that, but look to what he says.
