　多く愛する者は、多くなすのである。

　ことをよく行なう者は、多くなすのである。

　自分のためよりも公けのために尽くす者は、よく行なうのである。

　愛のように見えて、その実肉欲に過ぎないものがしばしばある。それは生まれつきの性向や、自分のことを思う心や、報酬をあてにする心や、安楽したいと望む心がまったくないというようなことは、めったにないからである。

　CHAPTER XV  Of works of charity

2. He doth much who loveth much.

 He doth much who doth well.

 He doth well who ministereth to the public good rather than to his own.

Oftentimes that seemeth to be charity which is rather carnality, because it springeth from natural inclination, self-will, hope of repayment, desire of gain.
